What I'm Reading January 28

Finished Letters to Camondo. The anti-semitism of 19th century France makes the atrocities of Vichy France inevitable. I think the epistolary format of this book left me feeling the absence of Camondo more, but also left the family at a distance. Very different than The Hare with Amber Eyes, but still glad I read it.

Also finished The Appeal by Janice Hallett. Another novel told in...I guess epistolary form? Texts and emails instead of letters, in which we hear from all the suspects in a cancer fundraising scam that results in a murder. I sped through it, and found it engaging, but the ending was pretty obvious about halfway through the book.

Finally, I also finished The Maid by Nita Prose. A hotel housekeeper on the spectrum finds the body of a regular guest, and becomes the prime suspect. A little pat, but it is described as a cozy mystery, so I should have expected the tidy wrap-up. Still, an enjoyable few hours.

Right now I'm reading The Bright Ages. I really wish I had a physical copy of the book. It's a reframing of The Dark Ages, mostly in Europe and the Middle East. Very good, but I find I really need to warm up when reading nonfiction, or I end up skimming pages and retaining nothing.

Still reading Letters to Camondo. I wonder if my expectations were too great. It's good, but I don't feel any connection to this book the way I did to The Hare with Amber Eyes

I'm re-reading a T.E. Kinsey Lady Hardcastle mystery before bed. I seem unable to break my British mystery habit, but I'm not complaining:)

I did speed through Hill House Vintage by Paula Sutton. I found it much deeper than I expected. She wrote about the pushback to her, a Black woman, writing about village life and cottagecore. She really nailed the response about Black joy needing representation. She was also on CBS This Morning addressing that as well. I enjoyed her book very much!

What I'm Reading January 15, 2022

I've been on a British mystery kick, and was midway through Murder at the Manor when Cari sent me a copy of Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village. Serendipity! I'm finishing up Agatha Christie's The Sittaford Mystery, a Christie I hadn't read before, then switching gears and starting Letters to Camondo. I loved The Hare with Amber Eyes, and Camondo got rave reviews from both Daunt and John Sandoe Books, so I've been looking forward to it.
